Unfortunately the YamDaisy Cafe in the Foyer Space at East Reservoir has been on hold since November last year. The venture was set up so that YamDaisy would be trading under Reservoir Neighbourhood House. We now have a joint statement:
It is with regret and a heavy heart that we confirm the YamDaisy café will not be going ahead in the foyer space at Darebin Community Health’s East Reservoir site. Unfortunately we were unable to find an appropriate solution to some of the issues faced with getting the café set up and therefore could not continue the café initiative at the East Reservoir site.
We would like to say a huge Thank You to our community and those involved in supporting this initiative. We value the time, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm shared by so many when it comes to local community projects and initiatives.
We will continue to work to develop and share opportunities that encourage partnerships, increase health and improve access to fresh food locally for our community.
Although it was ultimately unsuccessful, the process has made us stronger and clearer about what YamDaisy needs to be.
I will be taking some time to do the finishing up tasks. There are quite a few!
We received wonderful donations of equipment that were specifically for the Foyer Cafe. We plan to store them and make use of them in the future, they are wonderful assets for YamDaisy.
However, they were donations specifically for the Foyer Cafe so let me know if you would like your donation back. In fact it may be better to have them used by someone, instead of sitting in storage!
We set up the GoFundMe campaign specifically for this project, and using Reservoir Neigbourhood House’s charity status and bank account. As the project is not going ahead RNH will follow up refunding the donations back into the accounts of the donors, and then I will close the campaign.
If you would like to donate to YamDaisy again, that would be wonderful! We will soon have a fundraising campaign and our own bank account. You can be sure I will let you know when the time comes!
I need to completely update the website as I had changed it to suit the foyer cafe. I will try to a) be quick as it is our main contact with the world and b) go slowly to make sure it suits what we do next!
What we do next
This is the exciting bit.
Over the next little while we will put together a plan of what we can do, making a step (or two or three) towards our big vision of the YamDaisy cafe that provides a place in the community, and wonderful food for making eating well easier. (And then having a whole wonderful franchise of them!)
This is the bit that is wide open to possibilities! We would just love your ideas and feedback.
What can we do now? With the resources we have now? That will help get us to our goal?
Next post will have a range of ideas so you can let us know which ones you think will work best, and also to add further suggestions.
You don’t need to wait for that though! You can contact me anytime!
Thankyou again for your support
Hello this is the Monday YamDaisy Update!
I am glad to say that our GoFundMe donations are up to $750! Thankyou so much, donators!
Also, I have adjusted our Goal Total because of a wonderful $1,000 donation that didn’t come through GoFundMe, and thanks to lovely crockery donations that I have added up at $3 a piece and $48 for the stick blender and so taken $150 off the total for those!
Not only that! I have 2 boxes of donated crockery to check through, as soon as I have a minute spare. Thanks so much Kristine.
There are several people who want to help but are unable to make a donation through GoFundMe, so I have put up our enormous equipment list so you can check through in case you can donate something. A bit tricky if you are not near us! You can drop donated goods (or a cash donation) at Reservoir Neighbourhood House, or contact me to work something else out.
We love it if you find something for us at the back of a cupboard, in your local Op Shop, or maybe even brand new. They must be in good condition!
I’ll keep updating the equipment page (and adjusting our Goal Total!)
Don’t forget to donate, if you haven’t already, and to share posts with friends so they remember to donate too 🙂
Looking forward to writing the next update!
First we need her daughter to have grown up into a lovely, independent and helpful person. (Tick!)
Then we need her to manage her illness with discipline and micro planning. (Doing pretty well) *
Then the new kind of cafe needs to be a really important innovation, worth people going out of their way to help and support it. Another tick! Getting freshly made, delicious, healthy food into a warm friendly cafe and making it affordable to everyone is a great need. And if they run as a sustainable business, not-for-profit YamDaisy Cafes can open wherever they are needed.
A long lead time! Yep! The concept and shape of the YamDaisy cafe has developed over years and through so many conversations and consultations, into our first Pop-Up restaurant, our Pop-Up Takeaway and Soup Bar. We are ready!
Huge amounts of all sorts of support! See below:
Are we getting the support we need?
So far so good! Partnerships with Reservoir Neighbourhood House and Darebin Community Health Service mean we have a place and a trading structure and charity status. We have a terrific range of consultant/mentors.
Our wonderful community of supporters mean we have enormous good will and lots of people ready to help us any way they can. Many of our supporters are struggling with chronic illness and disability. and living with crisis made worse by poverty. We just love that these YamDaisy friends are doing what they can, donating things like washing powder, and soup bowls in good condition, to help us get everything we need to start.
We are depending on a wider circle of people to donate some money over the next couple of weeks for bigger items and things that can’t be donated.
This is happening! I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to see each new donation coming in through our GoFundMe campaign! We are up to $680 in donations as I write. 14 wonderful people have taken the time to hit the button and fill in the details! Every dollar goes to something we need to get set up and stocked. Some donations are from friends, and some from people who have heard about our venture and are prepared to invest in it. Thankyou so much everyone! If you haven’t had a chance yet, but can, please donate, and please share about us to people who might help! We still have a good way to go!
What else is happening?
There is so much happening behind the scenes as we work with dieticians and community workers, support staff and mentors, and our wonderful chef. We are sourcing produce, getting the last things done in the cafe space and all the permits finalised. I’m hoping I can tell you about our coffee machine soon! (We may be into delicious, healthy affordable food, but this is Melbourne and we need good coffee!). We are finding staff! We’ve got lists! And we are working through them!
The proof will be in the success of the Cafe!
But right now, we are on track to provide gorgeous food, to give impeccable service, to make healthy eating easy, and to respond to the needs of our East Reservoir community.
It is your support keeping us on track.
*And no major relapse please! Fingers and toes crossed and doing all the good things!
